You may not be incapacitated and bedridden while you recover, but you should choose the food you eat carefully and follow your dentist’s instructions. It could take as long as six weeks before the hole left by a wisdom tooth removal heals completely, but your swelling should be resolved and your stitches should have dissolved after about a week. You can speed up your recovery by rinsing with a saline solution two or three times each day. Just don’t rinse on the day of your surgery as this can prolong bleeding.
Your dietary intake should be limited to clear liquids like tea, apple juice or broth on the day of your wisdom tooth surgery, but you will be able to eat soft foods the following day. Stick to soft foods for at least a week. Rinse after each meal, and avoid strenuous exercise for at least a few days.
You should be able to brush your teeth gently a day or so after getting wisdom teeth removed, but you should wait at least a week before you visit your dentist for a cleaning. If you get your teeth cleaned too early, the tools used by the dental hygienist could disturb your stitches. It may also take a week or so before you are able to open your mouth fully, which is something you will need to do during a professional cleaning. Some people recover from wisdom tooth removal more quickly than others, so you should consult with your dentist if you have specific questions or concerns.
