Common Fears about wearing Dentures

Teeth are the first thing people take note of when looking at someone. It is, of course, important to continually maintain a healthy, beautiful smile at every age. As you age, tooth loss can happen, but that does not mean you have to lose your beautiful smile. Full and Partial Dentures are an excellent choice for many people. Some people are apprehensive about wearing dentures because of fears that are common amongst denture users. We will list the most common worries and help debunk them to reveal why dentures can be an excellent fit for you.

Social situations where dentures may fall out and cause a scene of embarrassment.

Modern Dentures come in two forms, Complete or Partial. Complete Dentures are used when no natural teeth remain, while partial dentures are used if there are teeth remaining. A properly fitted denture are made with the intention of them sitting in your mouth securely. Whether a retaining clip or other mechanism is used, the denture is intended to sit well without the need for denture adhesive.
This brings to light the usage of adhesives and when they are and aren’t appropriate. Adhesives are appropriate to enhance satisfaction with a properly fitted denture to increase retention, stability, and bite force. In cases where you have dry mouth conditions that lessen adherence, adhesives can also be beneficial. Finally, in persons with unusual demands with speaking, such as public speakers or musicians, adhesive can provide added security. Adhesives should never be used to fix ill-fitted dentures or when a dentist has not evaluated you for an extended period of time. At Austin Cosmetic Dentistry, we are committed in providing well-fitted dentures that suit your lifestyle and helping care for your dentures for as long as you choose to wear them.

Never getting used to them.

Newly fitted dentures do have a period where it takes some time to get used to. This is often for the first few weeks as the muscles involved with speaking become accustomed to the dentures. Eating with dentures also has a grace period of getting used to, but there are things you can do in the first few weeks, such as eating softer foods and cutting your food into smaller pieces while your oral muscles become accustomed. Speaking may also come with difficulty with pronouncing certain words. The overall idea to remember is that the muscles will become trained to talk with dentures and practicing words with normal conversation will help after a few weeks of adjusting to your new dentures.

Fear of looking older can often turn people away from dentures.

This is far from the truth as bringing your full smile back will give you greater confidence and help you feel and look younger. Dentures are made to look very similar to your natural teeth. Austin Cosmetic Dentistry is committed to bringing back your full smile to boost your confidence and feel younger.
